New Town Nijmegen
Solving the bottle neck
In Nijmegen, the Netherlands, the river Waal will get an extra ’by pass river’, to allow for increased river discharge. This secondary channel will create a new island just opposite of the city centre, creating a new waterfront.
This new development provides the city with the opportunity to enhance the city centre on one hand, and strengthen ecology along the river and in the city ate the same time. The integrated urban plan is already attracting international attention and is a successful example of integrating spatial quality and flood safety.
Five key elements stand out in the designs: flood safety, stakeholder participation, enhancing ecology and environmental, cultural heritage, and waterfront designed to experience the river.
